Overview

About hall false ceiling

The living room is usually where the main beam runs, and in most flats it crosses the room at an awkward point. A great deal of hall ceiling design exists to resolve that beam into something intentional.

Done well, a two-level ceiling takes the beam line and makes it the organising geometry of the room. Done badly, it drops the whole ceiling to the underside of the beam and costs you eight inches of height across the entire hall for no reason.

Answers

Hall False Ceiling — questions

How do I deal with a beam across my hall?

Align the ceiling design to it rather than hiding it. A feature band that follows the beam line and a cove on either side makes it read as deliberate, and keeps the rest of the room at full height. Dropping the whole ceiling to the beam underside is the common approach and it costs you height across the entire hall.

How much height will I lose?

At the perimeter cove, 8 to 10 inches on a two-level design. The centre of the room stays at full slab height. We mark the finished level on the wall during the site visit so you can see it before anything is built.

Will a ceiling fan still work?

Yes, but the down-rod has to be sized against the finished ceiling height, and the fan should be positioned clear of any dropped band. We check this before framing — a fan blade too close to a dropped level creates a strobing shadow that is very noticeable.
