Overview

About wooden tv unit

Solid timber moves. It expands and contracts across the grain with humidity, and in a city that swings from 40% to 90% relative humidity across a year, a wide solid panel will cup or split. This is why almost all good joinery uses veneer over a stable substrate.

That is not a compromise, it is the correct construction. What matters is the substrate grade, the veneer thickness, and the finish. Those three are what separate a unit that looks like timber in ten years from one that does not.

Answers

Wooden TV Unit — questions

Is veneer inferior to solid wood?

For a panel of any width, no — it is the better construction. Solid timber moves with humidity and a wide solid panel in Mumbai will cup or split. Veneer over stable plywood gives you the same surface without the movement. Solid timber belongs in narrow sections: edges, lipping, legs.

How many coats of PU should it have?

Four, sanded between. A single sealer coat and one topcoat is common in cheaper work and it shows within two years as the finish wears through at the handle positions. The coat count is worth stating in the quotation.

Will the veneer match across panels?

If it is book-matched and set out before cutting, yes. This requires the carpenter to plan the layout across the whole elevation rather than cutting panels individually, and it is the difference between a unit that reads as one piece and one that reads as several.
